Budapest: Ensivaikutelmasta eteenpäin

Miksi Budapest? Sattumako?
Heittäydy elämykseen... Joskus se on pakon sanelemaa.

Tämä on se toisenlainen matkaopas.
 
Tulin kaksi vuotta sitten heitetyksi Budapestiin täysin sattuman kaupalla. Kauan tähdätty vaihtokohteeni Barcelona oli sulkenut ovensa kielitaidottomalta viime hetkellä ja monen vuoden haaveilun ja suunnittelun jälkeen olin vaihtoon haussa nollapisteessä, kun hakuaikaa seuraavan vuoden kohteille oli jäljellä tasan kuukausi. Paitsi, että aikaa oli vähän suhteessa siihen, että vuosi 20-vuotiaan elämästä on suhteettoman paljon aikaa, lista elämäni kohteista oli typistetty mitättömäksi. Muistan punniinneeni Kööppenhaminan, Tukholman, Oslon, Brysselin ja Budapestin välillä. Kaikki hienoja kaupuneja, mutta kaikki niin kovin tuttuja ja turvallisia. Paitsi Budapest. Kirjoitin hakemukseni. Kävin kiireellä läpi kurssivaihtoehdot ja jäin odottamaan vastausta. En tiennyt, mitä tuleman piti. Tässä vaiheessa olin jättänyt kaiken jo arpaonnen varaan.

Thank you girls! I must say I felt the love when visited you on Uudenmaankatu and got my Autumn make-up on Katja's hands! Your energy and courage just sticks on me even though the make-up is washed off. And again, I must say I love what you've done to the premises. ...Niin ja tosiaan, tarkoitukseni olisi noista tunteiden vaikutuksista äänenmuodostukseen vielä kirjoittaa lisää, koska se nimenomaan vaikuttaa äänen luonnolliseen syntymiseen, kestoon ja äänialan laajentumiseen. Inspiraatio sinänsä hengityksessä tulee ja sitä voi käyttää itseään riemastuttamaan milloin tahansa jos kaipaa piristystä sillä mikäpä on ihanampaa kuin onnen "kurina ja pörinä" rintakehässä ja koko elimistössä, sitä se on kun happi löytää oikeisiin paikkoihin ja avaa lukkoja.

I had now understood how the breathing worked muscularly and physically but when I started to sing something did not connect. Then it was time for Päivi, the singing teacher, to poke me again. 

"Now you feel the breath, but what about the song? Aren't you telling something with it?"

And even better into a lesson how to motivate yourself, go from passive existing into active being and therefore it took me into the origin of inspiration.

1. I'm passing for the others to write about the Finnish Pavilion of New Forms of Wood in Venice Biennale, even though it's much more on the news now. Even though Timber Is the New Concrete as Alex de Rijke aptly said in this year's Alvar Aalto Symposium Crafted I find this exhibition far less interesting that the upcoming massive building projects of this century's most moving media companies.

2. Apple announced it's plans for the new headquarters not later than about year ago (August 2011)

and now quite sharply a year after (August 2012) it was seemingly time for Facebook to update their symbols and give their answer to Apple in the form of Frank Gehry's Fb Hq expansion plans. Take a look at the profile of the architect, their plans and see the message they're giving. Isn't Apple sleek, round and shiny first, only then ecological or social if at all? And what about FB doing expansion with trees above and interiors with Start Up mentality highly visible in the design?

Yeah, I was guessing that too. It's an usual symptom among creative people too. There's also an enormous  amount of good and not so good advice about getting rid of creativity blocks in several books, blogs, aforisms, improvisation classes and so on... And I will add one up here in my blog since I've never seen one of this kind before. Just wait! You'll be amazed by the sheer simplicity!

The Lore Of Spices

The Lore Of Spices: Their History And Uses Around The World by Jan Öjvind Swahn


This book presents around thirty known spices, their backround, folklore and tradition around them, usage and a few recipes. For some reason I think I will get back to this book often, and not the least beacause of its vivid illustration.
The Author is Jan Öjvind Swahn, person who has dedicated his time and knowledge for folklore research, especially food and food traditions. I think soon I might find more of his books at my shelves. This Book is something I've been looking for quite a time since I've for long had a dream to slowly develop myself a relevant knowledge about local spices and ingredients to farm and use in kitchen. And there it was! A perfect piece of folk knowledge just when I was on the mood to once really buy something. Today I set my I on it accidentally when I was strolling around Jyväskylä. It was a gray rainy day so I for once glanced at something else but the sky.

• Yesterday we made some cooking with friends to ease my Budapest longing and to open Hungarian culinary to the ones who haven't yet been so lucky to visit Hungary and taste the amazing food there.
  
  
  In Budapest I was lucky to get to know a Hungarian family where there was brilliant traditional Hungarian food made every day. While my visits with the family I got to taste some of it. The mother of the family wanted to show me some of the preparations. Their willing to share me some of their tradition and seeing something totally different from what I'm used to in kitchen was extremely moving and fascinating. Especially making dough out of potato, hiding fresh wild fruits into it and boiling the whole thing in water captivated me. I wanted to try to cook it by myself even though I am not the most skilled one when it comes to cooking. Luckily I found some incredible friends with whom I felt safe in kitchen.

Time to calm down, time to remember

Suomessa oloa on kulunut kuukauden päivät ja pikku hiljaa tavarat alkavat asettua paikoilleen, kaikki rakkaat on tervehditty ja vuoden aukko Suomen muistia päivitetty. Ympyrä sulkeutuu. Kun viime vuonna näihin aikoihin kirjoittelin vimmatusti hakupapereita ja tulin hyväksytyksi BME:lle, nyt palautan raportteja ja joku muu tulee hyväksytyksi kouluun. Näinpä istun koneelle ja alan muistella kokemuksiani, jospa niistä jollekulle olisi vielä apuakin.

Mistäs se kaikki alkoikaan...

Kukapa ei haluaisi olla boheemi tai ainakin näyttää yhtä vapaalta ja välittömältä, näyttää siltä, että elämä on helppoa kuin laiturin laidalla istuskeleminen suvessa. Mutta se, että luopuu tavallisuudesta, tunnollisuudesta ja kunnollisuudesta puolustaakseen periaatteitaan... se vaatii muutakin kuin valvottuja öitä ja viiniä.

Vajaa kaksi kuukautta...vajaa kaksi kuukautta aikaa kokea ja kirjoittaa!!
Viimeinkin kirjoitan. Uskomatonta, että siihen on niin kova kynnys. Johtunee kai siitä etten ole itsekään kovin hyvin ehtinyt jäsentelemään kokemuksia päässäni.  Tarkoitushan oli kirjoittaa blogia Budapestin kokemuksista, mutta kynäniekkailu on jäänyt vähille nyt kun on keskittynyt taistelemaan sen puolesta, ettei mikään kokemisen arvoinen jää tänä vuonna väliin. Jatkan silti blogia, siirryn vain realistisempaan lähestymiskantaan. Tulen vielä kirjoittamaan paljon kokemuksistani Budapestissa ja sen ulkopuolella, kunhan siirryn tekemisestä ajattelemisen puolelle... Se toden näköisesti tapahtuu silloin, kun on aikaa myös ruvetan ikävöimään takaisin. Tulkoon tämä blogin olemaan siis lääke ja selviytymistyökalu

Swerving into Architecture

After arriving back to Finland I've been spending so-lovely but so-lazy Christmas time having as my biggest challenge how to have enough time to meet everybody. After all this time with passive brain capacity usage I felt there's no return to the hard-valued-working life.
Finally Epiphany arrived and I gave up the lovely way to spent time only by eating, skiing and sleeping. When I had to leave the warm heart of my parents house and drive to the windy and cold Oulu-city I thought there was only inescapable mid-winter-angst waiting for me to pay back the good time I obviously didn't deserve with my lazyness. Surprisingly my theory didn't work and laziness had finally brought back my motivation and enthusiasm towards my studies. A huge bunch of Autumn's non-touched architecture magazines on the kitchen table became a saviour for the dark evenings of January.

Sen sijaan että purkaisin ajatuksiani käymällä yksipuolista keskustelua itseni kanssa, päätin nyt viimein testata ajatuksiani pakinoimalla kohdistetulle yleisölle. Tällä kertaa ei sen kummemmasta kuin nuorten kansanedustajaehdokkaiden fb-seinällä käymästä keskustelusta inspiroituneena. Vaikka en nyt ole edes heidän tasollaan kouliintunut poliittisen keskustelun kävijä enkä niin ollen aateopin tuntija saati sitten järeästi minkään poliittisen puolueen kannattaja, minun on nyt  viimein aika harjoittaa kielenkantojani tälläkin elämän osa-alueella. Kertokaa ihmeessä lukijat jos aika yleisellä tasolla liikkuva ja melko prosaistisesti ilmaistu käsitykseni ponnistaa mielestänne pelkästä väärinymmärryksestä.

Tiesitkö Suomen ja Unkarin taidesuhteista?

Viime viikkojen aiheena projektikurssien ohella on ollut Art Noveu ja nimenomaisesti Suomalainen kansallisromantiikka. Syventyminen aiheeseen selittää siis myös osittain edellisen blogitekstini. Syy miksi Budapestissä tarjoituu mahdollisuus opiskella Suomalaista kansalisromantiikkaa ei ole kansallisen suuntauksemme suuri kansainvälinen suosio vaan Unkarin oman kansallisromanttisen taidesuuntauksen kytkeytyminen vahvasti silloisiin taidesuhteisiimme.
Suomen ja Unkarin taidesuhteet olivat erittäin lämpimät vuosisadan vaihteessa. Moinen yhteys tutkimuksineen ja julkaisuineen yllätti minut, mutta toi lisää syvyyttä omaan Unkari-suhteeseeni.

Ensimmäinen kerta kun Suomesta luotiin brändiä oli vuosisadan vaihteessa kuin Suomalaiset kaipasivat jotain mille rakentaa kansallisen identiteettinsä. Art Noveau ja regionalismi vastasivat tähän tarpeeseen. Tavoitteet poikivat aikanaan Suomelle ja Suomalaisille edelleen merkityksellisiä ja hedelmää kantavia teoksia, kuten Kalevalan ja laajan valikoiman kansallisromanttista kuvataidetta, puhumattakaan arkkitehtuurista. Tätä aikaa kutsutaan Suomen taiteen kultakaudeksi. Tyylikaudella oli silloinkin oma kaupallinen leimansa ja mainstreaminsa, mutta ajan taloudelliset resurssit ja tavoitteet erosivat voimakkaasti tästä hetkestä. Voidaan sanoa että myös tällä hetkellä suomalaisuus hakee paikkaansa tai sanotaanko ne Suomen tunnukset ja ominaispiirteet, jotka tunnetaan, eivät toimi välineinä tämän päivän elämässä ja kilpailussa. Näillä perusteella voinkin hyvällä omalla tunnolla vedota Suomibrändäykseen vastaavana yrityksenä palauttaa kultturimme arvoonsa. Joskaan ei ole selvää tuottaako se läheskään samanveroisia tuloksia tai arvotuksia kulttuurillemme tai toimiiko se todellisten arvojemme pohjalta. Parhaimmassa tapauksessa Suomalaisuus päivitetään tähän päivään ja meille suomalaisille annetaan välineet insproitua suomalaisuudesta ja tuottaa ominaisuuksiemme pohjalta arvokasta maailmaa meille kaikille.

Just some experiences along the way... make a guestion if you want to know more

As an architect student I'm facing a hard perioid of finishing designs right now. But without the time to make many profound journals to you, I still want you to get the feeling of my trips along the way: The delight to make lonely discoveries in the city, run along Danubes bench.. find fellow loners, find places that not everyone enters... discover something small and something so huge in the same time... that's what makes the exitement and the heart for traveling to me.

I promise there will be some info some important thoughts attached later on...but as now.... A picture tells more than hundred word they say... enjoy the trip!!
